STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - First Unreleased Album 1978 (1978)

These recording, notable for their raw energy and rare slide guitarwork are essential for all true collectors. Also featuring fourearly arrangements of songs that later appeared on the Texas Flood album. Due to the brevity of the Nashville '78 session the producers have added a live soundboard recording featuring Lou AnnBarton and three tracks featuring Johnni Reno on saxophone. Tracks 1-10: Studio Recordings, Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Jack Clemont's Belmont Studio, early 1978. Bonus tracks 11-17, Austin Blues Festival 1979, Bonus tracks 18-20, Piona's, Oct. 1978.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Bluebird Lounge (1979)

In honor of Stevie's birthday, October 3rd! According to some Texans I know, Robert "Bluebird" Ealey was the owner of the Bluebird Lounge in Ft. Worth. I think that is who is sitting in on guitar and vocals. When I first got this tape a few years ago, I was thrilled. To come across any new Stevie is great, but an early show of this quality does not come along very often. Stevie toured relentlessly during 1978 and 1979. The 79 era is one of my all-time favorite periods for Stevie, but it is terribly under-documented. Those unstoppable chops came from night after night of gigging during this era. Here is part of one of those nights. This is very classic early SRV developing his own style. I am sure there must be more of this show out there. This recording has some fade ins, fade outs, and cuts. I suspect there is more out there. If you have a better version, please post it! If you are hoarding some early SRV, bring it out and share please! To me, the best parts of this show are Stevie's, but it is cool to hear him jam with an old-timer. This is loose stuff, clearly no rehersal. After a slow start, Ealey urges the band into a more funky version of The Thrill is Gone than they had in mind.

Robben Ford - City Life (2006)

These recordings from Seattle's London Bridge Studios made in 1988 and 1992 by guitar virtuoso Robben Ford feature a who's who of jazz musicians including Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Ralph Towner, Jerry Granelli, Julian Priester, Kenny Garrett and Anthony Cox. The material varies from Ornette Coleman to Charlie Parker, from Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Johnny Hodges. Unlike any of Ford's other studio recordings, here he adventurously inserts himself into the changing stylistic context from traditional jazz to modern open improvisation.

Robben Ford – Truth (2007)

Robben Ford is at that stage in his career when he needs to make a decision. It's been well established for decades that he is one of the truly great guitar players out there. He has mastered the many styles placed in front of him and bitten off and chewed more. But that doesn't necessarily mean he is a great songwriter; he's not, and that's painfully obvious on Truth. Perhaps the best that can be said about this recording is that it is the work of a very competent bandleader and producer who happens to play one hell of a mean guitar. It also features fine performances from organist Larry Goldings and bassist Will Lee, and guest appearances from Susan Tedeschi (whose soulful voice literally saves a cover of Paul Simon's "One Man's Ceiling Is Another Man's Floor") and Bernie Worrell (on "Riley B. King"). That said, Ford's songs are rather tired, generic, and unidentifiable except for his guitar playing and Goldings' amazing organ playing when he appears on one (though a notable exception to this is the midnight blue protest tune "Peace on My Mind"). His singing voice hasn't gotten any better with the years. He can hold a tune, but it's as if there isn't anything there. His choosing to cover Otis Redding's classic "Nobody's Fault But Mine" was a terrible mistake, as anyone who has ever heard the original would attest. If you are a Ford fan, you no doubt look forward to more of his playing and it's here; if you're not, and know nothing about the man, there is little here to recommend this set. Ford should pull a Tiger Woods and break everything he knows down and begin again; he has too much talent to simply coast like this. This CD was nominated for a Grammy award in 2007 for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Andy Timmons – Resolution (2006)

Danger, releasest the follow up to 2002's release "That Was Then, This Is Now", entitled Resolution. Timmons, alongside bassist Mike Daane and drummer Mitch Marine round out the band lineup. Recorded in Dallas, Resolution was co-produced by both Timmons and Daane. "This is the first real official Andy Timmons Band release," asserts Timmons. Resolution launches without delay, the opening track, "Deliver Us", is an instant assault of energy and rhythm, while the diversity and contrast in Timmons' ability as both guitarist and songwriter is no more evident than on "Gone", a jazz influenced track that lowers the volume and calms the mood perfectly. What truly shines through on each track is the confident sound of a telented artist given the freedom to explore with no restrictions.

Andy Timmons - That Was Then, This Is Now (2002)

Apparently nothing -- not punk, not grunge, nor any other movement based on the virtues of either economy or primitivism -- can kill the guitar god. There's just too much mythology woven into the idea of the nimble-fingered whiz standing heroically and playing faster than anyone outside of the Berklee School could imagine. So it is with Timmons, whose chops burn throughout this album like fire through dry brush. With only bass and drums behind him, he has unlimited room, all of which he fills with singing lines, hammer-ons, menacing low-register effects, and above all lots and lots of notes. (The one exception to this incendiary approach is the final track, "Slips Away," whose dedication to George Harrison more or less forces Timmons to put the brakes on.) The problem, of course, is that this style is about nothing else other than virtuosity; bluntly, the point it to show off. It's a gunslinger mentality that guides players like Timmons, but instead of pistols drawn at high noon, they stake out their territory at center stage and concentrate on blowing everybody away -- fans as well as the competition. Ultimately this aesthetic leads nowhere; the more real creative risks you take, the less likely you are to make an impression on connoisseurs who have learned to measure excellence by the guitarist's sheer velocity and use of certain idiomatic licks. The fact that these essentially similar tracks were recorded from 1994 to 2001 only makes their one-dimensional character more evident; in that respect, That Was Then, This Is Now is no better or worse than what's already been laid down in this genre and what's sure to follow (although, to be fair, it seems unlikely anybody else will dare to cover Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" as a surfer jam after this treatment by Timmons).

Eric Johnson – Bloom (2005)

It's no secret that the time gap between albums by guitarist Eric Johnson is on par with such notorious 'hibernators' as Boston. And the arrival of his fourth all-new studio release, Bloom, was no different, as it appeared nearly nine years after the release of 1996's Venus Isle. Whereas most guitar heroes of the late '80s and early '90s were all about reeling off a zillion notes per second, Johnson was the exception, as he penned songs that saw his guitar supplying the melody where a voice could have been. This 16-track release (his second for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label) is split into three separate sections -- 'Prelude,' 'Courante,' and 'Allemande' -- which are supposedly "grouped together in terms of vibe and style." Highlights include "Summer Jam" (which does a splendid job of showcasing his guitar tone), the chicken'-pickin' ditty "Tribute to Jerry Reed," and the almost Steely Dan-esque "Magnetized." If you like your sounds raw and gritty and music off-the-cuff, Bloom isn't the place for you. But for die-hard fans, Johnson delivers once more, as all his trademarks are well represented -- chops, tone, and extremely fluid playing.

Eric Johnson – Souvenir (2002)

Austin, TX-based guitar hero Eric Johnson is recognized as a perfectionist. He takes great care honing his sound. Along with that, the artist doesn't rush his album releases, as this outing signifies previously undocumented material spanning 25 years. Johnson's intent here is to provide his fans with an album available solely through his website. The artist states in the liners: "The thought came up of having occasional Internet releases. They would be issued as an interim series between regular studio releases." To that end, these tracks are surprisingly good, especially when considering that the bulk of this archival material consists of demos, incomplete ideas, and so forth. The majority of this affair highlights the guitarist's understated vocals atop his soaring lead lines and much more. On the piece titled "Space of Clouds," Johnson minces softly stated vocals with a Hendrix-like wailing guitar motif and his nimbly articulated fretwork. Johnson provides a narrative on a per track basis, and in this instance, added a synth overlay specifically for this album. Other highlights include the band's rocking version of the Beatles' "Paperback Writer," complete with Johnson's phased electric guitar choruses. The guitarist's longtime bandmates, bassist Chris Maresh and drummer Tommy Taylor, appear on most of these works, consisting of warm ballads, boogie rockers, and a memorably melodic pop/rock work titled "Virginia." Overall, this production transcends any preconceived expectations.

Eric Johnson - Seven Worlds (1998)

A rare find for fans of this acclaimed guitarist/songwriter, Seven Worlds is the long-lost solo debut from Eric Johnson. Cut in the late '70s, this album is far more than a promising collection of demos; it's a full length, fully-produced album that showcases all of Johnson's awesome talent -- not only as a guitar virtuoso, but as a talented pop/rock songwriter. Tunes such as "Showdown" clearly indicate the talent that Johnson had, even at this early stage. A classy false start to a great career, and a must for fans of Eric Johnson.

Eric Johnson - Venus Isle (1996)

Eric Johnson is notorious for his perfectionism, but the six-year wait between his breakthrough Ah! Via Musicom and its follow-up Venus Isle seems a little extravagant, especially considering the resulting album. In six years, it could be assumed that an artist would undergo a number of different phases, exploring several different musical genres and textures. Johnson didn't spend his six years exploring -- he spent them refining. Venus Isle reveals no new insights about the guitarist, it only offers a new spin on the territory Ah! Via Musicom covered. In one respect, this isn't a bad thing. Johnson is a consummate guitarist, pulling out tones and licks from his instrument that no other musician can quite match. It is a joy to hear him play, but Venus IsleVenus Isle would have been a perfect follow-up if it had been released in 1992 or 1993, but it has to rank as a disappointment, no matter how enjoyable portions of it are. nevertheless seems like a lost opportunity because he never departs from his standard bag of tricks. There are the occasional jazzy grooves, a handful of blues, several fusion numbers, and a few stabs at prog rock -- all of the things that distinguished the album's predecessor. With playing as stylish and distinctive as Johnson's, it may seem churlish to complain about the lack of innovation, but given the large span of time between albums, it should have been more adventurous and unique.
